Fiberglass yarn classified according to different yarn diameters

Fiberglass yarn

classified according to different yarn diameters

Glass fiber yarn can be divided into several categories according to the diameter of the single filament. These categories help meet the needs of different application scenarios. Glass fiber single filaments are cylindrical, and the thickness can be expressed by diameter. The classification based on the single filament diameter is as follows:

(1) Fine yarn: 3-10um

Single filament diameter: usually below 10 microns, common ones are 5 microns, 7 microns, 9 microns, etc. With the advancement of technology, there are now finer single filament diameters such as 4 microns and 4.5 microns.

Features: Fine yarn has high softness and weavability, suitable for products that require fine weaving.

Application: Commonly used in electronic grade glass fiber cloth, advanced composite materials, precision filtration materials, etc.

(2) Medium yarn: 10-15um

Single filament diameter: between 10 microns and 15 microns.

Features: Medium yarn has a good balance between softness and strength, suitable for a variety of uses.

Application: Widely used in various industrial fabrics, anti-corrosion materials, reinforced plastics, etc.

(3) Thick yarn: >15um

Single yarn diameter: usually above 15 microns, up to about 20 microns.

Features: Thick yarn has high mechanical strength and wear resistance, but relatively poor softness and weavability.

Application: Suitable for making heavy reinforcement materials, building reinforcement materials, composite materials, etc.

(4) Extra thick yarn: >20um

Single yarn diameter: more than 20 microns, sometimes up to tens of microns.

Features: Extra thick yarn has extremely high strength and good wear resistance, but poor flexibility and difficult to weave.

Mainly used to make high-strength composite materials, heavy machinery parts, etc.

(5) Electronic yarn:

Single yarn diameter: no more than 9 microns, usually 5 microns, 7 microns, 9 microns.

Features: Has excellent heat resistance, chemical resistance and electrical properties.

Application: Mainly used to make electronic grade glass fiber cloth, widely used in printed circuit boards, insulation materials and other fields.

(6) Direct yarn:

Features: Glass melt is directly drawn through a platinum filter plate to form a continuous single-strand untwisted roving.

Application: Commonly used to make high-strength composite materials, reinforced plastics, etc.

(7) Ply yarn:

Features: It is made by merging multiple strands of fine yarn and has high strength and flexibility.

Application: It is suitable for occasions requiring high strength and good flexibility, such as reinforced composite materials, ropes, etc.

These classifications not only reflect the physical properties of glass fiber yarns, but also reflect their application value in different fields. Choosing the right type of glass fiber yarn can better meet the needs of specific applications and improve the overall performance of the product.
